Dance Workshop: The Balboa
David Rehm
Session 1: Sunday, July 8; 6:30–8:30 PM
Session 2: Saturday, July 14; 6:30–8:30 PM
The Balboa is a partnered swing dance done in a unique, closed position with shuffling footwork. It
is done to all tempos of big band swing as well as some of the smaller jazz ensembles of the same classic style and even gypsy
jazz.
Often called "the easiest dance to learn, but the hardest to master," the Balboa has a simple basic
pattern and offers an excellent introduction to lead/follow relationship for beginning social dancers, while simultaneously
challenging more experienced dancers who seek to grasp its many subtleties.
With an explosion of interest and popularity in recent years, there should be many opportunities for
students who enjoy this workshop to continue studying the Balboa on their own.
This class introduces the Balboa basic pattern, movement style and partner dynamic, as well as
several simple variation patterns. No prior dance experience or partner required. Leather-soled shoes highly recommended.
